Green Day Country | United States Style | Pop Punk Rock Year | 1987 Website | Official Website First formed in 1987 under the name Sweet Children, Green Day is a popular pop-punk band from California. It was created by Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt. They experienced success in the mid-1990s and resurgence in popularity beginning in 2004. Their album American Idiot was turned into a Broadway musical. Green Day has been involved in charity work with the band U2 in response to Hurricane Katrina and to environmental agencies, wanting to reduce America's addiction to oil. The band was a vulgar critic of President George W. Bush and is a much more subdued, cautious kid-like approach when it comes to Barack Hussein Obama's actions. [1] ## Anti-Christian music[edit] In their 2009 album, 21st Century Breakdown, there is a song called "East Jesus Nowhere" in which they blast Christianity and related topics. On an earlier song, "Minority" their 2000 album Warning, the chorus includes the lines "down with the Moral Majority" and "one nation under dog." In 2010, Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer and guitarist for the band, appeared on Bill Maher's show, Real Time and stated that religion was, "a bunch of bull-s**t." During Green Day's performance at Woodstock 1994, on Sunday, August 14, 1994 in Saugerties, New York, Billie Joe Armstrong yelled out, "I hate God!" in between two songs. ## 1994 Boston Hatch Shell riot[edit] On September 9, 1994, Green Day played a free show at the Hatch Memorial Shell in Boston, Massachusetts. They began with the song, "Welcome to Paradise" and when they got to "F.O.D." the power was shut down and a mini-riot ensued. Dozens of people were injured and arrested.
