Uriah Heep is a rock music band from the United Kingdom that has been continuously recording and performing since 1970. They had major hit singles with "Easy Livin'" in the U.S. in 1972, "Prima Donna" in the U.K. in 1976, and "Free Me" in Germany in 1978. The band was named after a Charles Dickens character.

Former members Gary Thain (bass guitar) and David Byron (vocals) died at a young age. Thain at age 27 in 1975 of a heroin overdose, and Byron in 1985 from complications of alcoholism.

The core member of the band from the beginning to the present has been guitarist Mick Box. Ken Hensley was also a core member and songwriter until his departure from the band in 1980. Hensley recorded with Blackfoot in the 1980s, and in the 1990s accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior and became a born-again Christian. Other former and sometime members include: John Wetton, later to become a core member of the 1980s supergroup, Asia; and John Lawton, vocalist formerly of the bands Lucifer's Friend and the Les Humphries Singers both of which had been popular in Germany in the early 1970s.
