This Is England is an drama film directed by British director Shane Meadows. The film, set during the social and political upheavals of the mid-1980s, centres on the journey of a young boy from an uncontrollable victim of bullying struggling to deal with the death of his soldier father in the Falklands War to a member of what is initially a socially diverse and anti-racist group of skinheads, but which eventually falls under the violent influence of a racist, National Front-member fellow skinhead, recently released from prison. The film deals graphically with the issue of racism in 1980s Britain, and won several awards, including Best British Film in the 2007 BAFTAs and Best Film and Most Promising Newcomer for 13 year-old Thomas Turgoose at the 2006 British Independent Film Awards, for its stark and moving portrayal of 1980s skinhead culture and the ability of the far-right to manipulate the most vulnerable members of society for its own ends. In the UK, the film was rated "18" by the British Board of Film Classification for its depiction of racism, preventing younger cinema-goers from seeing it. Some councils later overturned this rating, feeling that the powerful moral message of the film should be able to reach a wider audience than that allowed by an "18" rating.
