A cryptochannel is a complete system of crypto-communications between two or more holders. A cryptochannel is analogous to a radio circuit.

It is also the basic unit for naval cryptographic communication. It includes:

* the cryptographic aids prescribed;
* the holders thereof;
* the indicators or other means of identification;
* the area or areas in which effective;
* the special purpose, if any, for which provided; and
* pertinent notes as to distribution, usage, etc.
