The Northern Echo is a major English regional daily newspaper, published in Darlington and covering north-east England between North Yorkshire and Tyneside; its circulation area overlaps significantly with that of The Journal, based in Newcastle upon Tyne. It was founded in 1870 and took a Liberal line on the political issues of the day. Probably its most illustrious editor, between 1871 and 1880, was W.T. Stead (1849-1912), who subsequently exposed the scandal of child prostitution in London and died in the sinking of the RMS Titanic.[1]
