Iron Dome (Hebrew: כִּיפַּת בַּרְזֶל, kipat barzel) is a mobile all-weather air defense system designed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.[1] It was developed to intercept and destroy artillery shells and short-range rockets fired from distances of 4 to 70 kilometers away. The system, created as a defensive countermeasure to the rocket threat against Israel's civilian population, uses technology first employed in Rafael's SPYDER system.[2] Iron Dome was declared operational and initially deployed on 27 March 2011 near Beersheba. On 7 April 2011, the system successfully intercepted a Grad rocket launched from Gaza for the first time. The Jerusalem Post reported on 10 March 2012, that the system shot down 90% of rockets launched from Gaza it fired at (rockets which will land in unpopulated areas are ignored).

In tests in early 2020, after upgrades to the Iron Dome, the system had a 100% success rate.[3]
