Shakhriyar Mamedyarov is a top ranked chess player, #14 in the world as of September 2022.

He was reportedly defeated in round 2 of the Sinquefield Cup in September 2022 by the lower-ranked Hans Niemann, in a match that can be reviewed on chess.com.[1] It was the first time that Niemann had ever defeated a player rated above 2750.

The following game Niemann, playing with the black pieces, reportedly defeated the world champion Magnus Carlsen, which was exceedingly improbable. Then the Sinquefield Cup beefed up their security against cheating, and Niemann did not win another game in the tournament despite having been in first place.
