The Battle of Germantown was an attack by the Colonial Army on British troops after the capture of Philadelphia in 1777 during the American Revolution. It took place shortly after the Battle of Brandywine and the Battle of Paoli.
After the battle a dog was found roaming in the patriots' camp. The fox terrier was discovered to belong to General Howe and was cleaned, fed, and during a negotiated truce returned.[1] General Washington had been missing his own dog at the time and understood the importance of that personal relationship.[2]
