The Colorado Avalanche are a professional ice hockey team based in Denver, Colorado. The Avalanche were founded as the Québec Nordiques (a French word meaning "Northerner") but moved to Denver in 1995 because Québec City had a small population, had close proximity to the larger, more popular team in Montréal and the higher NHL salaries due to the Canadian Dollar.

In the 1995-96 season, immediately after the move, the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup and would win again in 2000-01 and 2021-22. Until the 2006-07 season the Avalanche did not miss the NHL Playoffs. The Avalanche play in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference at the Pepsi Center. The fans at the Colorado Avalanche games set NHL records for longest consecutive sells out streaks.
