The following numbers were retired from play by the Tigers:
Ty Cobb had retired from playing before the numbers system was adopted in 1929, yet he is honored with the five Tigers above on the left and right field walls at Commerica Park; in addition all six were immortalized as a steel sculpture display near the park's main gate. Although a player for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Jackie Robinson was awarded a special honor throughout baseball in the retirement of his number for the contributions he made in integrating the sport.
