The Amplified Bible is an English translation published in 1965 that expands and updates the American Standard Version of 1901. The Amplified Bible uses a unique system of parenthetical references to synonyms to "amplify" translational nuances and also to add its own explanation and interpretation. Its publisher later produced the New American Standard Bible and promoted it instead. The Amplified Bible is cited by promoters of abortion for its translation of one of the rules of punishment in Exodus 21:22:[1] If men contend with each other, and a pregnant woman [interfering] is hurt so that she has a miscarriage, yet no further damage follows, [the one who hurt her] shall surely be punished with a fine [paid] to the woman's husband, as much as the judges determine. More established translations, such as the NIV, translate the bolded phrase as "she gives birth prematurely."[2] It is used on occasion to further explain a specific passage where the standard translations are not as clear (due to words in Greek and Hebrew not having English equivalents), but not as the main translation used by a pastor or ministry; only Joyce Meyer (the Missouri based Charismatic teacher) is known to use it regularly. ## References[edit] 1. ↑ http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=EXOD+21&version=45; (bolding added). 2. ↑ http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=EXOD 21;&version=31;#fen-NIV-2100e v • d • e Bible Versions 21st Century| English Standard Version • Holman Christian Standard Bible • 20th Century| Amplified Bible • American Standard Version • Biblia Hebraica • Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia • Confraternity Bible • Cotton Patch Version • Good News Bible • Hebraic Roots Bible • Jerusalem Bible • Living Bible • The Message • New American Bible • New American Standard Bible • New English Bible • New Jerusalem Bible • New King James Version • New Revised Standard Version • New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures • New International Version • Revised English Bible • Revised Standard Version • 19th and 18th Century| Douay-Rheims • Inspired Version • 17th, 16th, 15th Centuries| Geneva Bible • King James Version • Gutenberg Bible • Tyndale Bible • Ancient| Septuagint • Vulgate •
